Charlotte Knox-Williams – The Binary Fold
A book is separated into pages. These multiple folds, or leaves, mean that to go through a book entails a turn, even a switch. The digital, in its simplest form, is an alternation between a some-thing and a not-there. It is defined as being either turned on, or turned off. So, what of the turning in this oppositional flip? Might it be found to contain a similar sense of rotation, an opening out, a graduation or infiltration of one state into another? The proposed presentation will be a performative lecture that invites dialogue. Utilising film, sound and words, the inherent and inextricable interrelation of the digital and the book will be explored, with each being discovered and revealed within the other.
